Meet our New Research & Data Technologist, Bria Thomas

Bria Thomas

We’re excited to share that we’re growing out staff again at VNL. Bria Thomas, our new Research & Data Technologist, brings a wealth of experience from the public health field, along with a diverse skillset in technology and innovation. She’ll be working with both our Research and Data Science Team and our Engineers, serving as a link between our innovation and technology. We asked Bria a few questions this week to get to know he better. Keep reading to learn more about Bria!

What originally made you interested in working at VNL?

I loved that it was a tech company backed by science and research. It had been my goal for the past year or so to work for a company that valued both, so when I saw that I immediately was interested.

What's your job title and what will you be doing here?

My new position entails being a bridge between the data science team and the tech team. I hope to use my experience working at non-profits, hospitals and in research to provide insight on the development of the PARTNER and PARTNERme tools that focus on improving people’s networks, communities and personal ecosystems.

What did you do professionally before coming to VNL?

Before coming to VNL I was a public health professional working in data management, reporting and analytics. Most recently I worked at Metro Inclusive Health in the Tampa, Florida region.

What's the best place you've traveled to?

Ironically, one of my favorite places I visited was Denver, Colorado for the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in 2016. I loved hiking, the humidity-free weather and the beautiful landscape. It was very different than what I’m used to in Florida!

What inspires you to do this work?

Helping people solve problems that can better their physical and mental health inspires me to do this work. I want to be a part of making tools to make health and wellness accessible to everyone no matter your race, socioeconomic status or zip code.

What's a major accomplishment you're proud of?

I’m really proud of the fact that I’ve been teaching myself how to code. It has been and still is one of the most challenging things I have ever done. I took for granted the structure that came with my time in college and graduate school! I’m proud that I’ve pushed myself to continue learning!

What do you enjoy doing away from the job?

I enjoy trying new wines, taking cycling classes and reading books about behavioral economics, psychology and social justice. I also love an occasional Netflix binge as well!
