Meet our New Full Stack Engineer, Tyler Funk

This summer we are ramping up our Development capacity with the addition of two new Full Stack Engineers to our team. This week we’re introducing Tyler Funk, one of our new staffers. He will be supporting our development of the PARTNER CPRM and PARTNERme, a Person-Centered Network Tool. We asked him a few questions this week to get to know him a bit better as he gets started. We hope you enjoy!

Tell Us About Yourself!

I grew up in Kansas City, MO, and moved to the Denver area when my wife found a great job here. Since moving, she inspired me to start a career in tech, and after finishing Flatiron School I found VNL through another graduate who started working there before me–Tobie Tsuzuki! Once I learned about VNL’s goals and mission, I was certain this was a fantastic place to work where I could feel good about what I do every day.

What is your new position and what do you hope to accomplish in it?

I am a Full Stack Software Engineer, but since this is my first role in tech, you might even say I am in a Junior role! I want to be seen as someone who works hard, and constantly strives towards reaching VNL’s goals as a part of the team. I would love to be able to look back at the work I’ve done and be proud of how it benefits individuals, or organizations as a whole.

Who is a significant mentor in your life?

I would say I have multiple significant mentors from Flatiron School, however, Alex Vanston, my mentor from With Strangers prior to my work at VNL played a HUGE role in me achieving my personal goals. He gave me a way to earn production level experience after Flatiron School, and was invaluable to my success in finding work. He taught me that the dev community is one of the most well connected networks that exists today. He was so selfless in agreeing to help me out, and giving back to the community that also helped him get to where he is today. He inspired me to want to give back as well.

Where is your favorite place to visit on vacation?

My favorite place to vacation, which I have only been to once, is Ireland! What a beautiful country, and the people are so inviting! My wife and I toured almost half the country in 5 days, and we were enamored by the castles, rolling hills, and pubs! Most memorably though, we got to night kayak at Lough Hyne to experience bioluminescence (it was awesome!), and kissed the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle (it was scary!).

What do you like to do away from work for fun or hobbies?

I love getting outside as much as I can, but would prefer to be golfing more than anything else! I am also really into video games, both for fun, and also to keep in touch with friends back in Kansas City. My wife and I also enjoy trying new restaurants, playing casual tennis, and taking our dog to parks, breweries, and hikes in the mountains.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and why?

This is a hard one, hmm, I guess my super power would be the ability to instantly heal any injuries to myself or others around me. That way my power could be used for me AND for the good of mankind!

Alex joined VNL in 2017, originally supporting our events. He now helps manages our communications and marketing strategy and content development work. Alex creates blogs, infographics, reports, and other content while managing our web and social media presence. He also runs our email marketing campaigns, tracks analytics, and conducts market research to drive our strategy. He supports our entire team with copywriting, graphic design and research, and helps with events, webinars, demos, and other online learning.
